Lemon Herb Salmon
for You & Your Husky
Two fillets. One basket. The omega-3 dinner that’s as good for her coat as it is for your hormones.
Salmon is one of those rare ingredients that works for everyone at the table — including the one with four paws who has been watching you open the fridge for the last twenty minutes.
This is the dinner I make when I want something fast, genuinely nourishing, and generous enough for two. Luna gets a plain fillet — no seasoning, cooled before serving, bones removed — while mine gets lemon zest, fresh dill, and a drizzle of good olive oil. The air fryer handles both in under 25 minutes total.
There is also a real nutritional argument for feeding Luna salmon. The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon — specifically EPA and DHA — support joint health, reduce inflammation, and are one of the most effective natural supports for coat condition in Nordic working breeds like Huskies. So this is not just a sweet dinner idea. It is genuinely one of the better meals you can feed her.
Never give dogs raw salmon — it can carry a parasite (Neorickettsia helminthoeca) that is dangerous, even fatal, to dogs. Always cook salmon fully through. Remove all pin bones before serving. No lemon, no garlic, no dill, no salt, no oil of any kind for Luna’s portion. Fully cooked, plain, cooled — that is the rule.
- 1 salmon fillet (150–180g), skin on
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Zest + juice of ½ lemon
- 1 garlic clove, finely minced
- 1 tsp fresh or dried dill
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- Salt + black pepper
- Asparagus spears (8–10)
- 1 salmon fillet (100–130g), skin on
- Nothing else — completely plain
- No oil, no lemon, no herbs
- No salt, no garlic, no pepper
- Cook fully through (no pink inside)
- Remove all pin bones before serving
- Cool completely — 10–15 min rest
- Serve skin-off or on (both fine)
Before touching any seasoning, place Luna’s fillet on a separate board and set it aside. This is the most important step — do it before your hands have any oil, lemon, or spice on them.
Mix olive oil, lemon zest and juice, minced garlic, dill, oregano, salt and pepper. Coat your fillet well and let it sit for 5 minutes while the air fryer preheats to 180°C (355°F).
Place her plain fillet skin-side down in the air fryer. Cook at 180°C for 10–12 minutes, until fully cooked through with no translucency in the centre. Remove and set aside to cool on a plate — she will wait, even if she pretends she cannot.
Add your marinated fillet skin-side down, with asparagus spears alongside. Cook at 190°C (375°F) for 10–12 minutes depending on thickness. The asparagus should have slight char at the tips. Do not overcook the salmon — it should flake at the thickest point but still be moist.
Run your fingers along Luna’s cooled fillet to find any pin bones — remove them all. Serve her portion once it is fully cool to the touch. Plate yours with the charred asparagus and an extra squeeze of lemon.
Why omega-3s matter on a keto Mediterranean plan
Salmon is one of the richest dietary sources of EPA and DHA — the long-chain omega-3s that directly support hormone regulation, reduce systemic inflammation, and improve insulin sensitivity. On a keto diet where you are already reducing inflammatory seed oils, prioritising fatty fish like salmon two to three times a week is one of the most impactful single changes you can make for hormonal health and anxiety reduction.
“Luna sat next to me the entire time I was cooking. I am not sure if it was the lemon or the salmon, but she was very convinced it was all for her.”
One of the best things you can feed a Husky
Siberian Huskies were bred for endurance in harsh conditions. Their coats, joints, and cardiovascular systems respond exceptionally well to omega-3 supplementation — and plain cooked salmon is one of the most bioavailable sources you can give them. Regular omega-3s are linked to reduced shedding, better skin hydration, and improved mobility in larger working breeds.
Keep her portion to 100–130g. Always cook fully through — raw salmon can carry a parasite called salmon poisoning disease that is specific to dogs and can be fatal. Remove all pin bones. Cool completely before serving. If she has never had fish before, start with a smaller amount to check for any sensitivity.
This is the kind of dinner that takes almost no effort and somehow feels like a proper occasion. The salmon is on the table in under 25 minutes, Luna has had something genuinely good for her joints and coat, and you have hit your omega-3s, your protein, and kept your carbs well under 5 grams.
Not bad for a Tuesday night with a Husky sitting on your feet.
